📜 Th' Ship's Log: Butt Facts (100% REAL!!)
Th' Cap'n did his research. Every one o' these be true. Look 'em up, ye doubters.
Scuttlebutt
On old sailing ships th' drinking-water cask was called a butt. Cut a hole in it (a scuttle) an' ye've got th' scuttlebutt, where sailors gathered to drink an' gossip. That be why gossip is still called scuttlebutt.
A butt be a real unit
An English wine butt held 126 gallons: two hogsheads, or half a tun. So technically this whole website be about barrels.
Th' poop deck
Th' raised deck at th' back o' th' ship. Th' name comes from French la poupe an' Latin puppis, both meanin' “stern”. Nothin' to do with poop. Th' Cap'n checked.
Buttock lines
Shipwrights draw a hull as slices. Th' up-an'-down slices runnin' from bow to stern be officially called buttock lines. Ask any naval architect. They will sigh.
Springin' a butt
In a wooden hull th' end o' a plank be its butt. If one pops loose from th' frame, th' ship has sprung a butt an' starts takin' on water. Bail, ye dogs!
Two kinds o' booty
Pirate booty (plunder) comes from th' old French butin, meanin' loot. Th' other meanin' sailed in centuries later. This website honours both.
